[Guide] Punishments and Appeals (2024)

[Guide] Punishments and Appeals (1)

[Guide] Punishments and Appeals (2)

Hello! This guide will explain the various punishments that Hypixel may issue. Remember! Always read official Support guides! "Homemade" guides like this one are not guaranteed to always be correct – if you find any misinformation in this article, please make sure to report it below in the replies section immediately, so the issue can be resolved. Thank you!

Please also keep in mind that staff members, including the Appeals Team, work hard every day to keep Hypixel the place that it is today. If your appeal is denied, please remember that creating complaints, hate, or "why was I false banned" threads will not help you. False punishments have a meager chance, and making assumptions before you know the facts will make you look like a fool. These threads are not directly against the rules, but they are highly likely to just be deleted.

Mutes are issued for chat offenses. This means that breaking chat rules could get you muted, for however long staff thinks it is correct. Mutes will, literally, mute you. You will not be able to talk in chat for the remainder of the mute publicly. You will still have the ability to use essential commands. However, controls related to sending chat messages are disabled.

> Why was I muted?

You can be muted for a variety of reasons. Below are the main reasons; however, keep in mind that punishments are up to staff members. They may decide to mute you for an undisclosed reason, which may not be listed in the below guide. BBcode is currently broken, so I sadly cannot provide a direct list here without it taking five years to be curated.

> How do I know if I was muted?

It's pretty self-explanatory; however, here is an image of one (not mine). It will provide the reason, the length of the punishment, and where you can learn more about your mute. You can also find your mute ID right below that. This ID will be used to appeal the mute. Do not share it! This can be used to create an appeal for you, likely with the malicious intent of getting it denied, making the punishment final. Remember that the decision made on your appeal is final.

Here's an example of a mute (this isn't me) the player was muted for "discrimination."

Server Bans

Bans are issued just like mutes; however, they are for more severe offenses or offenses that are unrelated to chat. Just like mutes, you can get banned for a variety of reasons. You won't be able to join the network for the remainder of the ban.

> Why was I banned?

You can be banned for a variety of reasons. Below are the main reasons; however, just like mutes, keep in mind that punishments are up to staff members. They may decide to mute you for an undisclosed reason, which may not be listed in the below guide. Spoilers are still broken, as said above, so it's just going to sadly have to be a link for this one, too. xD

> How do I know if I was banned?

Again, just like mutes, it's highly self-explanatory. Log in to the server, and it will tell you whether you are banned or not. For example, again, this is not me; this player was banned for using cheats. It might be what you see, might not.

> I'm banned, but I didn't do anything?

In this situation, your account may have been compromised, or you are using a modification against the rules. I highly suggest reading the rules before using modifications, as you may or may not be punished for what you are using. Keep in mind that all modifications are to be used at your own risk. You may see me now and then provide the last login information for users, and here is the link to where I get that. It's public for use so that you can check your account.

You can find the last login information at the following site. Enter your username, and the last login data for your account will be provided, which is directly extracted from the Hypixel API or SlothPixel's 3rd-party API.

Hypixel Compromised Checker

> "Your account has received a security alert!"

When a suspicious login is detected on your account, you have a chance to receive a security alert. If you do, make sure to change your login information immediately. It could signify that your account was compromised. For more information on account security, I suggest reading the Account Security Guide or following some of the security tips below.

You can appeal it; however, it will only be reduced to 30 days, none further. The 30d is used to contact Mojang Support if the hacker changed your password. VPNs can also cause security alerts; they are not recommended. For more information on why you may have received a security alert, please visit the Account Security Guide.

Reporting a Rule Breaker

Have you found someone breaking the rules? Some players may hide it, and some will blatantly cheat right in your face. Either way, it's the right thing to report these rule-breakers. When you report a player, be rest assured that 90% of reports are viewed and taken care of. Remember that Watchdog is just a bot, and staff are ordinary people like you and me; they can't ban every single hacker in a minute. If you would like to report a rule-breaker, there are two ways to do so.

> The Report Book (/report)

NOTE: Hypixel Support does not process reports. Please only report in-game. Don't make threads asking users to report someone. This is considered public shaming, which is against forum rules. Your thread will likely be deleted or edited by a moderator. Additionally, don't make false reports! They will be discarded; at some point, you will be punished.

You can use the report book to report users by using /report. A book will then be brought up listing different reasons you can report a player for. For clarification purposes, I have listed the meaning of all the reasons listed in the book:

  • Chat Abuse/Scam: Reporting a player for messages in various chat forms.
  • Cheating: A player is suspected of cheating using modifications, giving them advantages over other players.
  • Bad Name: A Player has an inappropriate or offensive username.
  • Guild Name/Tag: Guild name, tag, or inappropriate ranks.
  • Cross Teaming/Team Griefing: Cross-teaming in solo games or team games, or griefing their own.
  • Bad Skin/Cape: A player is wearing an inappropriate skin or has an inappropriate cape active.
  • Bad Pet Name: A player has given their pet an inappropriate or offensive name.
  • Boosting: A player is boosting their statistics.
  • Bad Item Name: An item or weapon has got a bad name in-game.

Here's an example of the report book:

[Guide] Punishments and Appeals (9)

The book is pretty straightforward; select the reason you are reporting them for and move on. This is also the way you can report someone for a chat. There is another way you can report a user, which might be easier for you.

> Watchdog Report (/wdr)

This is specifically for cheating. You can use /wdr <player> <reason> to use this feature. There is no official list of reasons for this, which is why it can be a bit tricky; however, things like "Antikb," "Killaura," "Bhop," etc., will work. There's no "GUI" for this, so, unfortunately, I can't show a photo of reporting. It's just a command.

Account Security Tips

Keeping your account safe is the basis of not becoming compromised. It's strongly suggested to have a secure password, security questions, and more. Read this section for essential security advice; for more, visit the Account Security Guide.

> Securing Your Account

There are many simple things you can do to secure your account correctly. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Use secure, long passwords.
Where possible, use passwords that are at least 12 or more characters in length. This helps to make your password far harder for a person or machine to guess or brute force (obtain through lots and lots of login attempts to the account).
  • Use a range of characters for your passwords.
Use various character types, including letters (capital and lowercase), numbers, and special characters (e.g. ! @, and #). That said, be careful with common substitutions. “P4aS5W0rd!” is not secure and can still be easily guessed.
  • Keep passwords unique for each website account.
If one website's passwords are breached, and you are using the same login information on other accounts, this can be used to compromise multiple of your accounts, which may as well include your Minecraft account. Don't do this.
  • Setup security questions.
Where available, set up security questions so that websites will confirm that you are you when taking specific actions on them. For example, Mojang accounts with security questions can’t change their passwords or email addresses without filling out the security questions.
  • Setup Hypixel Argus.
Argus is a security feature introduced by Hypixel a few months ago. It can alert you to a suspicious login detected on your account. This can be used to send a message to your email or even on the forums. More info can be found at
    https://hypixel.net/argus.
  • Do not click on sketchy links!
If you are unsure whether a link is safe, you should not click it. If someone is sending you these types of links in-game, you should report them as directed above immediately. Please be safe when on the internet.

Punishment Appeals

You can appeal if you feel you have been falsely punished. Sympathy is not involved in appeals. You are either innocent, or you are guilty. Unbanned, or not. If the appeal is denied, that is the final decision, and you will have to wait it out.Do not appeal if you are guilty. As said before, no sympathy is shown in appeals. Once an answer is received, that is the final decision, as you can only appeal once. Remember that actual staff members view and read every single appeal. They use copy and paste responses to speed appeals up, and at the same time, they do not have the time to create a personal response to every appeal. If your appeal is denied, the staff team has valid evidence against you. Staff will not provide this evidence. This can be used to help cheat client developers further develop their clients to resist Watchdog's detection.
