Kenshi: Best Base Locations (2024)

Kenshi's open world can be a hostile place for players to live in. Depending on how players start the game, they will enter the world surrounded by roving bands of thieves, cannibals, or even already enslaved. While there isn't a narrative journey within Kenshi, players can make their own path in this world and make their own outpost.

Outposts are created when, instead of buying one of the structures within the cities of Kenshi, a player builds a structure outside a city's walls. Once completed, players open themselves up to world events such as tax collection, bandit threats, and rival assaults. For those players looking to find some of the best places to build a base, this guide is here to help.

The Border Zone

Kenshi: Best Base Locations (1)

A low level and low risk area, the Border Zone has a few solid options for players looking to start out their settlement journey in Kenshi. Basically a no-mans-land slotted between the Shek Kingdom and the Holy Nation, the Border Zone is actually the home of several game starts and is therefore quite forgiving.

When it comes to the enemies, players will be harassed by Starving Bandits and Dust Bandits, neither of which pose much of a fight, especially if a player has invested in one of Kenshi's best armor sets. There are plenty of resources in this region including iron and copper nodes that players can harvest and a pair of major towns (the Hub and Squin) where players can sell ores.

The Leviathan Coast

Kenshi: Best Base Locations (2)

A region in Kenshi that is more popular with wild creatures than NPCs, the Leviathan Coast is in the far northwest of the map. A settlement in the central to northern portion of this region is a great option for those looking to get away from the frustrating bandit raids, taxes, and Prayer Days associated with other areas in the game. Its wildlife and weak enemies also makes it an ideal place to keep animals such as Bonedogs fed in Kenshi, as these creatures can feed off the dead.

The Leviathan Coast is home to fertile land with plenty of water as well as numerous iron nodes and stone mines around. This makes a settlement here plentiful in resources but, unfortunately, short on outside trading options. In a game as long as Kenshi, however, this outpost could be used as part of a larger system that connected to major cities.

Okran's Pride

Kenshi: Best Base Locations (3)

Relatively close in geography to the Border Zone, Okran's Pride is a solid option for players looking for protection within the borders of the Holy Nation. There are fertile lands and resources enough to sustain a sizable outpost and the area is well protected from roaming bandits and other aggressive NPCs by Holy Nation squads.

Unfortunately, an outpost within the borders of the Holy Nation is subject to Prayer Days when, once a week, a player's character must engage in prayer. On top of this, that religious order is intolerant of non-humans and any outpost within their border that has other species is at risk of being attacked.

Deadlands

Kenshi: Best Base Locations (4)

For those other species that are not welcome in the Holy Nation, the Deadlands is a great option. This region is one of the most polluted zones in all of Kenshi and features almost constant acid rain, making it welcome only for robots, hives, and those other species who have protected themselves against acid. It is home to Black Desert City which features merchants to trade with as well as a handful of Ancient Locations.

The limitations of the Deadlands are in its lack of quality iron and copper resources, lack of fertility, and lack of wind. There are roaming iron spiders which can pose quite a challenge to early players but few other hostile NPCs, making this region in Kenshi one of the more manageable ones.

The Northern Coast

Kenshi: Best Base Locations (5)

The Northern Coast trades some seclusion players get from the Leviathan Coast for more trading options. Within the region itself is a Fishing Village where players can conduct trade and sleep. The region is also close to the massive city Worlds End as well. The enemies in the region are typically straightforward cannibals and there are plenty of stone and iron resources as well as suitable conditions for farming in this area.

What limits this area depends on exactly where players establish their outpost. Placing too close to the south and east may result in players having to pay the taxes of the United Cities as well as participate in Holy Nation Prayer Days. Players who haven't built up a large squad of Kenshi's diverse characters aren't going to find many options for recruitment here either.

Kenshi is available on PC.
