BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Voters across the state headed to the polls on Saturday, Oct. 14 to cast their votes in the Gubernatorial Primary Election.

Governor of Louisiana

With Gov. John Bel Edwards term-limited, many people were looking to take his place. Fifteen candidates qualified in the race for governor.

The candidates were:

  • Benjamin Barnes (IND)
  • Patrick Henry “Dat” Barthel (REP)
  • Daniel M. “Danny” Cole (DEM)
  • Xavier Ellis (REP)
  • “Keitron” Gagnon (NOPTY)
  • Sharon W. Hewitt (REP)
  • Jeffery Istre (IND)
  • “Xan” John (REP)
  • “Jeff” Landry (REP)
  • Hunter Lundy (IND)
  • Richard Nelson (REP)
  • John Schroder (REP)
  • Frank Scurlock (IND)
  • Stephen “Wags” Waguespack (REP)
  • Shawn D. Wilson (DEM)

Jeff Landry was elected as governor of Louisiana.

Lt. Governor

In the race for Lieutenant Governor, Republican William “Billy” Nungesser, the incumbent, hoped to fight off the five candidates eyeing his position.

The candidates who qualified include:

  • Elbert Guillory (REP)
  • “Tami” Hotard (REP)
  • Willie Jones (DEM)
  • William “Billy” Nungesser (REP)
  • Bruce Payton (IND)
  • Gary Rispone (NOPTY)

Nungesser claimed a victory in the race and will continue in the role of lieutenant governor.

Secretary of State

Current Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin chose not to seek re-election, so eight candidates qualified to run for his seat.

Those candidates were:

  • “Gwen” Collins-Greenup (DEM)
  • “Mike” Francis (REP)
  • Amanda “Smith” Jennings (OTHER)
  • Thomas J. Kennedy III (REP)
  • Nancy Landry (REP)
  • Arthur A. Morrell (DEM)
  • Clay Schexnayder (REP)
  • Brandon Trosclair (REP)

Nancy Landry and Gwen Collins-Greenup will face off in a runoff.

Attorney General

With Attorney General Jeff Landry running for governor, five candidates qualified to get their names on the ballot to take his place.

Those candidates were:

  • Lindsey Cheek (DEM)
  • “Marty” Maley (REP)
  • “Liz” Baker Murrill (REP)
  • John Stefanski (REP)
  • Perry Walker Terrebonne (DEM)

Liz Murrill is set to face off against Lindsey Cheek in a runoff.

Treasurer

With State Treasurer John Schroder running for governor, his seat was open for the taking. Three people qualified for the race.

Those candidates were:

  • John Fleming (REP)
  • Dustin Granger (DEM)
  • Scott McKnight (REP)

John Fleming is set to take on Dustin Granger in a runoff election.

State Senator

The State Senate race for District 13 in Livingston Parish had 2 candidates vying to win:

  • Valerie Hodges (R)
  • Buddy Mincey Jr. (R)

Valerie Hodges defeated Buddy Mincey Jr. for State Senate.

In East Baton Rouge Parish, dozens of candidates were hoping to become elected.

East Baton Rouge Parish

There were 3 candidates in the race to become District Judge of the 19th Judicial District Court including:

  • Reazalia Allen (D)
  • Colette Greggs (D)
  • Sclynski Lyn Legier (D)

Colette Greggs won the election with 53% of the vote.

In East Baton Rouge Parish, 4 candidates were vying to become Family Court Judge:

  • Caulette Twin Jackson Guillard (D)
  • Laurie Marien (R)
  • Kathy Reznik Benoit (R)
  • Kyle Russ (R)

Caulette Twin Jackson Guillard is facing Kyle Russ in a runoff election.

The race for sheriff in East Baton Rouge Parish had 2 candidates:

  • Sid Gautreaux (R)
  • Jeffrey Lamonte Sanford (N)

Gautreaux won the race and will continue in the role of sheriff.

Also in EBR, two candidates hoped to become East Baton Rouge Clerk of Court:

  • Donna Collins Lewis (D)
  • Doug Welborn (R)

Doug Welborn came away with a victory in the election.

Voters also decided on a parish-wide proposition for the 3.13 Mills Renewal - 10 years. Nearly 64 percent of voters said yes.

In East Baton Rouge Parish, voters decided to pass the Shenandoah Estates Crime Prevention and Imp. District $75 parcel fee for 8 years. According to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office, 73 percent of voters said yes.

BESE

Several seats were up for election within the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) including District 6, which represents parts of East Baton Rouge, Livingston, Ascension, Tangipahoa, and Washington Parishes.

District 6

  • Ronnie Morris (R)
  • Jodi Rollins (R)

In addition, District 8 represents parts of East Baton Rouge Parish, East Feliciana, West Feliciana, St. Helena, West Baton Rouge, Ascension, and Iberville:

District 8

  • Preston Castille (D)
  • Dolores Deedee Cormier-Zenon (D)

LIVINGSTON PARISH

There were two people running for Livingston Parish Sheriff. Jason Ard won his re-election by just 115 votes.

  • Brett McMasters (REP)

Two people were running for Livingston Parish President. Randy Delatte was elected to the position.

  • “Jeff” Ard (REP)
  • “Randy” Delatte (REP)

Ascension Parish

Two people were running for sheriff of Ascension Parish. Bobby Webre won the election and will continue as sheriff.

  • C. J. Matthews (REP)
  • “Bobby” Webre (REP)

Two people were running for president of Ascension Parish. Clint Cointment came away with a victory and will continue in his position.

  • Murphy J. Painter Sr. (IND)

In Ascension Parish, the race for District Judge of the 23rd Judicial Court included 3 candidates. Jones is set to face off against Turner in a runoff election.

  • Keyojuan Gant Turner (D)

West Baton Rouge Parish

Three people hoped to become sheriff of West Baton Rouge Parish. Bergeron and Fontenot are headed to a runoff.

  • Leo Fontenot (DEM)
  • “Zack” Simmers (REP)

Two people were running for parish president of West Baton Rouge Parish. Jason Manola was the winner of the race.

  • Grover Harrison III (NOPTY)
  • Jason Manola (NOPTY)

Two people were running for city marshal of Port Allen. Sonny J. Massey was elected to the position.

Iberville Parish

Three people were hopeful to become parish president of Iberville Parish. Chris Daigle won the seat.

  • Jessel “Mitchell” Ourso Jr. (IND)

East Feliciana Parish

Three people were running for sheriff of East Feliciana Parish. Jeff Travis won the election and will continue as sheriff.

  • “Jeff” Travis (DEM)

West Feliciana Parish

Two people were running for parish president of West Feliciana Parish. Kenneth Havard claimed a victory in the race.

Assumption Parish

Two people were running for sheriff of Assumption Parish. Leland J. Falcon won the race.

Four people were running for sheriff of St. Helena Parish. Clay Chutz won the race.

Tangipahoa Parish

Six people were running for sheriff of Tangipahoa Parish. “Chris” Gideon and Gerald D. Sticker are headed to a runoff.

  • Joyce McGee Jackson (DEM)
  • M.V. “Vinny” Mendoza (DEM)

  • Prohibits the use of private funds in the administration of elections.

  • Provides that the freedom of worship is a fundamental right worthy of the highest protection.

  • Dedicates certain payments to be applied to the state retirement system unfunded accrued liability.

  • Restricts ad valorem tax exemptions for certain nonprofit organizations.

Yes - 66%

Louisiana Senate District 6

Two Republicans were fighting for the spot to replace Bodi White who has held the Louisiana District 6 seat since 2012. This district covers Baton Rouge, Central, and Denham Springs.

The candidates were:

  • “Rick” Edmonds (REP)
  • Barry Ivey (REP)

“Rick” Edmonds won the race with 62% of the vote.

State Representative for 18th District

Three people were running for State Representative of the 18th District. This district covers Pointe Coupee Parish, West Baton Rouge Parish, and Iberville Parish.

Those candidates were:

  • Tammi Fabre (REP)
  • Jeremy S. LaCombe (REP)
  • Shanda Paul (DEM)

Tammi Fabre and Jeremy S. LaCombe are headed to a runoff.

State Representative for 62nd District

Three people were running for State Representative of the 62nd District. This district covers West Feliciana Parish, East Feliciana Parish, and the Zachary area of East Baton Rouge Parish.

Those candidates were:

  • Roy Daryl Adams (DEM)
  • Daniel Banguel (DEM)
  • Dadrius Lanus (DEM)

Roy Daryl Adams was the winner of the election.

State Representative for 63rd District

Three people were running for State Representative of the 63rd District. This district covers East Baton Rouge Parish.

Five people were running for State Representative of the 66th District. This district represents the St. George area of East Baton Rouge Parish.

  • Hollis “Bubbe” Day (REP)
  • “Richie” Edmonds (REP)
  • Drew Maranto (REP)

Emily Chenevert is set to take on “Richie” Edmonds in a runoff.

State Representative for 68th District

Five people were running for State Representative of the 68th District. This district covers Baton Rouge Mid-CIty to south Baton Rouge, including Perkins Road and Siegen Area.

  • Belinda Creel Davis (DEM)
  • Robert “Max” Grodner, Jr. (DEM)

Belinda Creel Davis and Dixon McMakin will face off in a runoff.

State Representative for 70th District

Four people were in the race for State Representative of the 70th District. This district represents the Kenilworth/Gardere area to the Burbank area.

Those candidates were:

  • Brent Campanella (REP)
  • Barbara Reich Freiberg (REP)
  • “Steve” Myers (DEM)
  • Jennie Seals (REP)

Steve Myers and Barbara Reich Freiberg will participate in a runoff for the seat.

State Representative for 71st District

Three people were running for State Representative for the 71st District. This district represents Livingston Parish.

Those candidates were:

State Representative for 81st District
